Why are the videos only available to rent/subscribe, rather than purchase? I've received this question a few times and decided it deserved a thorough answer on my blog. Free tutorials on wedgingI mentioned in the first Core Skills video (free to watch) that I am not going to cover wedging in my videos. If you need wedging lessons, here are my recommended wedging videos:
Symmetrical and Asymmetrical Wedging https://youtu.be/FTgEJBRRJGA Stack and Slam Wedging (said to be easier on the wrists) https://youtu.be/HApNjUnI9U4 The Core Skills SeriesThe Core Skills videos are for beginner and beginner+ students. This means you have some experience with throwing, up to two years of experience. You can consistently center and throw small pots. I find that many pottery students plateau at this level, and need some clear direction to progress further. Once you've conquered all of the Core Skills projects, you will be a skilled and cognizant thrower who can throw any pot you want.
If you are an abject beginner who has never touched clay, you can do this program too, if you are sufficiently brave! Plan on spending a lot of time on the steep learning curves of centering, and learning how to position and brace your body. If you have more than beginner+ experience, these videos are designed to still be challenging for you. The level of difficulty advances quickly, and my expectation standards are high. No matter your experience level, for anyone who feels they have plateaued with their skill level, these videos will get you back into gear and moving forward again. HandbuildingAlthough I am primarily a wheel-thrower, I make a lot of handbuilt pots too. I will share my favorite techniques here.
Glaze and Surface TopicsAll of my glazing topics are geared towards cone 6 firing in an electric kiln. Future plans for this series include lessons on mixing your own glazes, and developing your own glaze recipes.
Business TopicsAs of now, I don't plan to make many videos on business subjects. But sometimes an opportunity presents itself where shooting a video makes too much sense.

(RE: The Core Skills Series)
"I am so grateful for this series. I have been throwing full-time for just over two years and your teachings have filled in so many gaps in concept/method that I feel I lacked. Your approach is straight-forward, simple and clear. It's inspired me to take my time when working in multiples and hone each step of the process. My pots have made a huge improvement this month. Looking forward to taking the next series. Thank you, Mea!" — Sarah in Ontario, Canada (RE: Glazing Basics) "By far the best glazing tutorial, so unselfish. The artist is sharing so many things that she has learned through experience and repetition. A humble thank you!" — Vera on YouTube (RE: How to Mix a Glaze) "I have enjoyed every minute of your patient, clear, thoughtful description of a process which now seems doable. I hope I'll be able to sleep tonight for the excitement of it all. Thank you for your generosity." — Andrea on YouTube "I like your teaching goals. This is what you need. This is what you do. This is what it does. This is why you use it. How to trouble shoot, is a quiver you want a bunch of arrows in. I appreciate what you are doing and how you are doing it. Thank You." — LambentLark on YouTube "I started this adventure in a school, where I attended a year. Then the covid came and I locked myself up for a year practicing at home. Now I am taking your classes, learning more than ever. I follow your lessons very carefully. I want to thank you for your way of teaching, simple and didactic, your peace to transmit ideas, your inspiring projects. From Madrid, a big hug!" — Monica in Madrid, Spain "Loving every single course session, and picking up more and more each time I watch. My pots have already benefited from your methodical approach! Hope I am fortunate enough to meet you in a class someday! " — Mary in Galena, IL "Mea is a top flight teacher and has a way to get to the point quickly without skipping over the important nuances. I've taken one of her courses and I can say it was the best money I've spent in a long time. She is shy about "tooting her own horn" so I'm going to do it for her: TAKE HER COURSES!" — Hugh in Sedona, AZ "Mea is clearly one of the best pottery teachers on the internet. Her no-nonsense lessons are methodical and easy to understand. Even though classes are on the internet, she gives a strong impression that she actually cares. How refreshing. I learned new or better ways to work on each of the three videos I've watched so far. A great investment for newbies or anyone who wants to take it to the next level. Thanks Mea." — Al in Oreana, IL (RE: The Intermediate Wheel Series) "Thank you, Mea. These videos are excellent. I have been throwing for two years, and have made many of the forms in the series, but after watching your videos, my skills have improved significantly. I really appreciate your deliberate, step by step approach." — Dawn in Vancouver, Canada (RE: The Core Skills Series) "Your instruction is so clear and helpful.... Before your course, I was definitely stuck as a beginner. Once I began your lessons, I finally started to control the clay instead of it controlling me. These days, I feel proud of my work." — Susan in North Olmsted, OH "I have been throwing on a kick wheel for the past six years .... I do have a number of competences but I feel and you do refer to this, as having reached a kind of "plateau." I need to go deeper in full knowledge of each geste .... precision, efficacity .... but to arrive at this one has to have the intention .... for me this is a key concept not only in ceramic but in life in general." — Diane in Marsac, Hautes Pyrénées, France "Your videos are excellent, the instruction is clear and precise, the camera work and editing is very well done, and you are nice to listen to! Some YouTube videos out there, the people just drone on and on about whatever, but yours are exactly what you need and nothing you don't. Clear, concise demonstration and explanation. Well done!" — Dianna in Fairbanks, AK "I am a hobby potter (for now) and I work from home, so I don't get exposed to new/correct techniques often. I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful teacher you are & how much I enjoy and appreciate the videos you've put together. I can see that every single step & motion in your practice has been considered and refined. It is very generous for you to share it with us." -Tricia in Goshen, NY "Excellent video, Mea. I love the straight forward instruction and focus on detail and finishing work. Thank you!" — Sheri, Halifax, NS, Canada "Finally an online program I can agree with. I’m so happy that I found your course and I am eager to start. I’m currently enrolled in one of those in-person 8 week courses and agree that being left to my own devices quite frankly isn’t working. The goal is to purchase my own potters wheel and develop my skills at home. Once I get my potters wheel I will begin your program! Thank you for offering it!" — Briana in Orlando, FL "I just rented and watched your "Project 10: Four Handles" video. I have longed to learn how you pull and attach handle No. 4. Thank you very much for the outstanding lesson!" — Lolo in Lansing, MI "Thank you for your handle video. Changed the way I pull my handle. Now I pull it straight from the pot. Once in a while I stare at the handle. I cannot believe I made it with the knowledge from a 22 dollar video." — Ly Truong, Seattle, WA "I have been attending pottery workshops for the past 10 years and have yet to find someone who can explain throwing and trimming as clearly as you do." — Graham in Tallahassee, FL "Thanks so much for doing the videos. You speak a potters language that makes sense to me." — Preeta in Sacramento, CA "Mea's Core Skills Series looks well organized and very well produced. She sticks to simple basics (core) but in-depth skill development. Well done, Mea!" — Marcia Selsor, Professor Emerita, Montana State University-Billings "High quality, professional videos with succinct instructions. Not a minute is redundant or off topic." – Ly Truong, Seattle WA "Yesterday I had an informative 90+ minutes watching your pricing video. It will really help...looking forward to collecting data from my next 20 shows. Thanks for making it available! — Jill in Jacksonville Beach, FL "I rented your video (Pricing Your Pottery), thank you for doing it. You explain everything very clearly and articulately. I hope to take some of the insights and apply them to my business." — Asta in Kew Gardens, NY "Thank you Mea! Your videos are supporting my skill development at my chosen pace and I love it. I've grown a lot over the last year thanks to your videos." -- Shawn in Manassas, VA (RE: Glaze Like a Pro) "Thanx Mea! Excellent & comprehensive, yet simplified, generous and gently guiding through all the process but without limitation of students freedom with rigid rules. Work of a true master of it's craft!" — Vedran in Novi Sad, Serbia |
